Becoming a Reality: The South Campus Begins to Take Shape

In October 2023—after more than ten years of planning–Head-Royce School broke ground on the South Campus. And in the months since, the progress has been rapid and remarkable.

The plan—which adds eight acres of lightly developed land—is now well underway. The construction began with the clearing of non-essential buildings and quickly shifted to the restoration of historic structures.

The South Campus project is now transitioning into the final stages with the exterior of the three historic buildings nearing completion, the salvaged tile roofs installed, new historic windows in place, and plaster patching well underway. In the coming months, prior to dismantling the scaffolding, these buildings will be painted with historical aesthetic details added.

At the time of print, painting on the inside of the buildings is progressing, and cabinetry, millwork, and flooring installation will start soon. After these finishes are completed, system start-up and testing will occur prior to final inspections and sign-off by the City of Oakland.

On the grounds, the Loop Driveway and parking area have taken shape, with the first layer of asphalt being placed in September. Concrete hardscape, landscape irrigation, planting, site furnishings, and miscellaneous other site details are progressing. In the coming months, the work on Lincoln Avenue to add/replace the traffic signals and tie-in the storm drain will commence.

With all the outdoor stairs poured and the Loop Driveway and parking areas defined, it becomes clearer every day what the campus will look like in its final form.
